scribed him as an adequate Big Ten quarterback, nothing more. Of course, Smith heard similar criticisms before Harbaugh arrived in San Francisco. DE'VEON SMITH Pro: The vision has improved and the 5‑11, 228‑pound junior is no lon‑ ger trying to run over every defender he encounters, understanding a sim‑ ple shift of his hips and feet, to elude a would‑be tackler, is perhaps more effective. Smith averaged 4.8 and 4.5 yards per carry behind offensive lines that saw all other ball carriers average 4.5 and 3.2 yards per rush, respectively, in 2014 and 2013, and while he lacks top‑end speed, he makes the most out of his ability. At least early this spring, he has moved to the top of the depth chart. He has also demonstrated the willing‑ ness, and the proficiency, to block. Con: Junior Ty Isaac, eligible after sitting out 2014 following his transfer from Southern Cal, and junior Der‑ rick Green possess far more physical ability than Smith. The 6‑3, 240‑pound Isaac, especially, is the all‑around back U‑M can build an offense around. He represents a fresh start for the Maize and Blue. Smith still has some bad habits, like running up the back of his linemen, and his stats are inflated by two 100‑ yard games against Appalachian State Junior running back De'Veon Smith may have moved to the top of the depth chart this spring.
