INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS "It's not actually anything I wanted to do," she said with a laugh. "I wanted to do physical therapy at first, but then I got here and I realized I wasn't into that kind of science. I just did some research and was looking at some different majors, and I saw computer science. It was really funny because when I decided to go that route my mom kind of just mentioned that I always had a thing for computers growing up, so I guess it was meant to be. "It's a combination of four different majors actually. The four majors are computer science, linguistics, philosophy and psychology. There are four different tracks and you choose one. I'm on the computation track, so my main focus is computer sci- ence. I can also take classes in the other three fields. That's basically how it works." When Lawrence isn't smacking home runs, stealing bases or doing homework, she somehow manages to find time to be an intern for a company near campus. Lawrence's schedule worked out in such a way that she's been able to gain valuable work experience this semester. "I have an internship right now with ADP, it's an automatic data processing com- pany, it's one of the biggest payroll companies in the world," she explained. "It's in the technical field, which involves a lot of trouble-shooting with clients, and we do a lot of client support. "It actually worked out perfectly this semester because I don't have class on Mondays and Wednesdays so I go to my internship on those days. It's still in Ann Arbor, only about 10 minutes away, so it works out really well with everything else." Everything else obviously includes playing softball and being a top-notch student in the classroom. Lawrence described the challenges that being a student-athlete at Michigan entails and also explained how she manages to do such a good job with them. "It's really tough and challenging to stay on top of your studies," she said. "Even when you are traveling and missing classes you've got to still keep up. You just have to get ahead on your work and plan things out. That really helps with the traveling and missing classes." Lawrence seems to have it all figured out on the diamond and in the classroom but she says there is still one big goal she hasn't attained. She's doing everything in her power to make sure she does before she's finished at Michigan. "Obviously our ultimate goal is to win the national championship," she said. "We want to win the regular-season Big Ten championship and the Big Ten Tournament championship, too. "As an individual, I know it's always good to have individual goals, but my main goal is to just always do my part. I want to stay focused on that to help the team win. If I get an individual accomplishment out of it, that's nice, but the team goals are much bigger and better." — Brandon Brown
