■ WOLFPACK CLUB NEWS The Legend of Joe Hayes There is a gathering of loyal Wolfpack basketball fans for a happy hour at the University Club, either before or after each ACC home game. It is a time to celebrate the team and socialize with other Wolfpack fans. The group calls itself "The Joe Hayes Club", but there is a bit of a mystery as to how it got started and who, exactly, was Joe Hayes. This is an attempt to set the record straight, or at least record the story as it has been passed down over the years. The legend of Joe Hayes begins with the legendary coach, Everett Case who was at State from 1946 to 1964 and who is credited with putting NC State and the ACC in the world of great basketball. His early teams were a mix of young men just out of high school and returning veterans from World War II going to college on the GI bill. In an effort to keep this mix of athletes in check after practices and off campus, Coach Case told the teams that he had a personal friend and avid basketball fan, Joe Hayes, who visited the joints on Hillsbor- ough Street most every night. If Joe spot- ted any of his players in one of the joints, breaking training, word would get back to the coach. Whether it worked or not is unknown, but all the early players were aware of some guy named Joe Hayes who was "always watching". When a group of former players, fans, and faculty members, decided to join together before or after the ACC games to talk basketball, they decided to call themselves "The Joe Hayes Club" as a way to honor Coach Case's friend, imaginary or real, who kept an eye on the team. Through the years many former players and former coaches, including Norm Sloan and Les Robinson, have been active participants at Joe Hayes gatherings. Quite often, members of the Wolfpack Club staff, Athletic Directors, and Assistant coaches will visit. It is truly a very diverse group and well suited to the name "Joe Hayes".
