COMMITMENT PROFILE Michigan fans are very familiar with Detroit Cass Tech High School (see ar- ticle on page 42-45). Several players in the past decade — 10 since 2008 alone — have gone from Technician to Wol- verine. While the Maize and Blue have missed on Cass Tech's top player in each of the past two classes, both pick- ing Ohio State (defensive back Damon Webb in 2014 and running back Mike Weber in 2015), that trend doesn't look like it will be repeating itself this year. Offensive lineman Michael Onwenu gave his word to become a Wolverine June 2, on a trip to campus. It was just the latest of many visits to Ann Arbor for the 6-3, 367-pounder. "I'd seen everything, but this was the first time my family was with me," Onwenu said. "I brought my whole family, we toured every inch of the campus, and they really liked it. That's how I came to the decision. "It wasn't really that it was the 'right day.' I just felt it, so [a commitment] happened. It just felt right." Since committing to Michigan, the four-star has staked a strong claim to become one of Michigan's highest- rated pledges. Currently the No. 9 offensive guard and No. 191 overall prospect nationally (and the fourth- best rising senior in Michigan) ac- cording to, the big man impressed at the Rivals Five-Star Chal- lenge in Baltimore in early June and should see a bump in the rankings down the road. "It was a battle down to the wire for the offensive line MVP honors, and if it had gone to Onwenu, it wouldn't have been a surprise," said Rivals Southeast recruiting analyst Woody Wommack. "The Michigan commit has great strength and plays with terrific lever- age, making him a difficult matchup for any type of interior lineman. It's crazy to think that Onwenu will only get stronger when he gets to college, especially if you're a defensive line- man that will have to battle him on Saturdays."
