INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS U-M REGENTS APPROVE DESIGN FOR COMPETITION AND PERFORMANCE PROJECT The University of Michigan Board of Regents paved the way for another leap forward in the area of facilities during its May 21 meeting. Regents approved the schematic design for a 280,000 square-foot project for men's and women's track and field, cross country, lacrosse and women's rowing. Referred to as the Athletics South Competition and Performance Project, it comes at a price tag of $168 million. Funding will emanate from donor resources and gifts, especially Stephen M. Ross' gift of $100 million, U-M officials noted. The performance and team center for the project will give the squads involved specific spaces, as well as some areas that are shared. Included in the project are strength and conditioning facilities, athletic medicine quarters, a performance lab, and individual locker rooms and meeting spaces. The rowing team will benefit from an indoor rowing tank, the first ever at Michi- gan. Track fans will see new facilities, including an outdoor track that can seat 2,000 and an indoor track allowing for 500 spectators. Michigan's newest sports, men's and women's lacrosse, get their own space, including a 2,000-seat lacrosse stadium. The project, on Michigan's South Athletic Campus, will also provide an addi- tional 200 parking spaces. The facilities will be completed in the winter of 2018, according to athletic department projections.
