The league's top team, whether the regular season or the tour- nament/championship winner, was inversely awarded the maximum number of points based off the number of competitors. So in softball, U-M was awarded 14 points because it won the Big Ten in a sport with 14 teams. Maryland was awarded six points in women's lacrosse because it won the conference title in a sport with six teams. Only Michigan and Ohio State compete in every single of the Big Ten's 28 recognized sports, while Rutgers participates in all 14 wom- en's sports but does not compete in ice hockey, gymnastics, tennis, and swimming and diving on the men's side.
