INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS FIRST-ROUNDERS HIGHLIGHT U-M'S STRONG SHOWING IN NHL DRAFT For the first time since 2007, Michigan produced six NHL Draft picks, highlighted by first-rounders Zach Werenski and Kyle Connor, during this June's selection process. A defenseman, Werenski went No. 8 overall to the Columbus Blue Jackets — U-M's highest pick since fellow defender Jack Johnson went third in 2005 — while Connor, a forward, was the No. 17 overall pick, going to the Winnipeg Jets. A record haul of seven Wolverines went in both the 1990 and 2007 NHL Drafts, with six selections in 1978, 1984, 1994, 2001 and now 2015. Zach Werenski had an impressive debut with the Wolverines and was picked eighth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL Draft. PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL
