"What a tough way to lose a football game. I'm proud of this team and the effort that was displayed. That's a gutsy group of guys in there that went toe-to-toe for a while and had a chance to win one of the biggest games in a long time. It got away from us." — Football head coach Mike London after his team dropped a 34‑27, heart‑breaker to then‑ No. 9 Notre Dame Sept. 12 "This was a nice win for our program. Our kids played extremely hard, and that is the type of effort it takes to win in the ACC day in and day out. It has been a long time since a UVa team beat Duke and even longer since it has been done in Cameron." — Volleyball coach Dennis Hohenshelt after the Wahoos earned a 3‑1 win over Duke Sept. 25 (it marked the program's first win in Durham since 2003 and ended a 17‑match losing streak to the Devils) "It's good to start out with a win obviously, but as a pack the guys ran really well today. That is probably the best pack-run race we have had in the four years I've been here. "First through eighth [in our lineup], everyone was so close, and that order is going to change as the year goes on. Having a lot of depth is what great teams have, and it allows us to do things that we have not been able to do in the past." — Men's cross country head coach Pete Wat‑ son after his squad claimed the team crown at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational Sept. 26, thanks to having eight of the top 17 finishers HOO'S TALKING ◆ Oct. 16, 1948 — In his first start, second-year running back John Papit sets a school record with 224 rushing yards and scores three touchdowns on just 16 car- ries against Washington & Lee in a 41-6 road win. The former All-American's jersey was retired in 2008, and he passed away this April after complications from a stroke. ◆ Oct. 18, 2003 — Versatile running back Alvin Pearman records more catches than anybody in program history with 16 grabs, which gained 134 yards and a touchdown, against No. 7 Florida State. The Cavs lost 19-14, but the effort also tied the ACC mark for most receptions in a game. Pearman is also tied for second in school annals with 13 catches, which he accomplished later that year against NC State. UVA HISTORY ALVIN PEARMAN PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA
