Not only does the incoming 2016 class (Class of 2020) have to meet the rigorous standards of UVa Admissions, the NCAA initial- eligibility requirements to compete for incoming first-years will also become more stringent beginning August 1, 2016. Current NCAA initial-eligibility standards require a prospective student-athlete (PSA) to earn a minimum of a 2.000 core course grade-point average and corresponding test score (SAT-1010/ ACT-86) in 16 core course units in order to compete. The 16 core course units include: English-4 units Social Science-2 units Math-3 units Additional academic core Science-2 units (e.g., Foreign Language, One extra unit of English, any course from previously Math or Science mentioned areas)-4 units These 16 core course units can be completed any time prior to the completion of the PSA's eighth semester in high school. Beginning August 1, 2016, the initial-eligibility requirements will now require PSA's to earn a minimum of a 2.300 core course grade-point average and correspond- ing test score (SAT-900/ACT-75) in 16 core-course units in order to compete. The 16 core course units remain the same as above; however, 10 of the 16 core course units must be completed prior to the start of the PSA's seventh semester in high school and seven of the 10 core course units must be from the English, math or science core units. Further, if a PSA earns between a 2.299 and 2.000 core course grade-point aver- age and corresponding test score (SAT-910-1020/ACT-76/86), he or she may receive athletically related aid and practice in their first year; however, they are ineligible to compete. As you can tell by the increased initial-eligibility standards, the emphasis by the NCAA membership is to ensure the student is prepared to be a successful student- athlete upon entering their collegiate institution.
