PREP PROFILES Detroit Martin Luther King four‑ star cornerback Ambry Thomas is a national recruit with offers from schools within each of the Power Five conferences. The 5‑11, 165‑pounder has taken trips to Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Pittsburgh and West Vir‑ ginia, and includes all but the Pan‑ thers in his bak‑ er 's dozen of top schools. Auburn, K e n t u c k y, M i ‑ ami, North Caro‑ lina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Okla‑ homa, South Car‑ olina and Tennes‑ see round out his top group. It's hard to get a feel for where he might end up, but the nation's No. 16 cornerback and No. 154 overall prospect is building a rapport with the coaching staff in Ann Arbor. "My recent visit was good," Thomas said of his trip to U‑M, which included taking in the men's basketball game against Northwest‑ ern Feb. 24. "When we got there we sat down and talked a little football with the coaches. We ate some food and then went to the game." Thomas had been to Ann Arbor many times before and knows the coaches, campus and football side of things pretty well, but the program's new defensive coordinator is trying to get to know the rangy corner. "I talked with Don Brown the most when I was there," Thomas said. "I got to know him a little bit better. He told me about his background. He seemed like a really cool guy to me." Thomas has never given off a Michigan‑lean vibe, but if Brown keeps working on him that could change. College coaches will cer‑ tainly do their part to convince T h o m a s t h e i r s c h o o l i s t h e place to be, but he'll have other influences much closer to him. H i s s e n i o r t e a m m a t e s a t King include wide receiver Don‑ nie Corley, who signed his letter of intent with Michigan State and is already in East Lansing as an early enrollee; running back Martell Pett‑ away, who inked with West Virginia; and fellow cornerback Lavert Hill, who signed up to play his college ball for U‑M. All three of those programs are in Thomas's top group, giving each school an advocate. Thomas is prob‑ ably closest with Corley, but played the same position and spent a lot of time with Hill over the past season during King's Division II state cham‑ pionship run. — Brandon Brown Detroit Cornerback Checks Out The Wolverines ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ Martin Luther King Detroit Class: 2017 Position: Cornerback Ht.: 5-11 • Wt.: 165 Rivals.com Rankings: No. 2 player in Michigan, and No. 16 cornerback and No. 154 overall prospect nationally Ambry Thomas
