INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK SIERRA LAWRENCE EARNS BIG TEN HONOR Michigan senior center fielder Sierra Lawrence garnered Big Ten Player of the Week honors in softball for her work in the days leading up to the May 2 announcement. Lawrence tore up conference pitching as April gave way to May, hitting .692 (9 for 13) in four contests. The senior boasted a 1.462 slugging percent- age and a .750 on-base percentage during that time. She recorded three hits in a game against both Central Michigan and Penn State. In the April 30 doubleheader versus the Nittany Lions, Lawrence went 5 for 5, with a pair of walks. She also hammered home runs in three consecutive contests. Lawrence's honor became the sixth Big Ten Player of the Week recognition by a Wolverine this season. ALEC PANTALEO EARNS JUNIOR FREESTYLE TITLE Michigan sophomore wrestler Alec Pantaleo earned the 145.5-pound free- style junior national championship at the United World Wrestling weekend (April 29-30) at Las Vegas' South Point Hotel and Arena. Michigan featured a trio of finalists, along with seeing five place in the competition. Those five gained a spot in the UWW Junior World Team Trials May 20-22 in Irving, Texas. Pantaleo posted a 6-0 record to claim the title. He recorded four techni- cal falls and a pin, prior to taking down Princeton's Matthew Kolodzik with a 5-1 decision in the championship final. Through the entire competition, Pantaleo outscored his competition, 54-3. MASON FERLIC QUALIFIES FOR OLYMPIC TRIALS Michigan fifth-year senior co-captain Mason Ferlic became a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials with his strong showing in a May 1 track meet at Stanford. Ferlic finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:28.77, topping all collegians with his personal-record performance. His effort marked the second-best ever at Michigan in the event, a time under the U.S. Olympic standard of 8:30. He beat the USATF Olympic quali- fying time by more than three seconds. Ferlic is gearing up for the U.S. Olympic Trials, set for July 1-10 in Eugene, Ore. A top-three finish there would punch his ticket for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. — John Borton
