ichigan Director of Athlet-
ics Warde Manuel signed the
$127.12-million deal with Nike just
three days into the job, according
to reports by several major news
sources garnered through the Free-
dom Of Information Act.
The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press
and MLive all received the FOIA in-
formation and reported on the deal.
Payment breaks down into the
following categories for the 11-year
agreement, beginning in August:
$56.8 million in apparel, $53.52 mil-
lion in cash and $12 million in a sign-
ing bonus (plus an extra $4.8 million
in apparel that isn't included in the
yearly totals). The final total could
reach $173.8 million, if the parties
pursue a four-year option beyond the
initial deal.
The Nike contract begins on Aug.
1, and a number of contract stipula-
tions have come to light. As previ-
ously reported, Michigan will used
the Jumpman brand for basketball
and football (U-M will be the only
school in the nation wearing that
Jumpman for football).
