a lecture to Bacon's class at Michi- gan, giving students a bracing tour through the bad old days of wom- en's athletics. "It's pretty eye opening," Bacon said. "She's telling them stories about wearing pinnies instead of uniforms, practicing at 12 o'clock at night, taking two vans to Iowa City, not a plane like Magic Johnson, one of her classmates. The jaws drop. You're talking to Jackie Robinson, telling you what it was like and what the pioneers had to go through to make all of this happen." She's still making it happen, Ba- con insisted. "One of her players said after she was nominated to the Hall of Fame, 'I came here a girl with potential, and left here a woman with no lim- its,'" he recounted. "That is as good as it gets." Hutchins insists her life at Michi- gan fits that same description. "It has been my greatest honor, for 32 years, to be the head coach at the University of Michigan," Hutchins offered. "The pride and tradition at this university is something I view as a privilege and an honor. Every student-athlete who plays in our program is what sets us apart." Make no mistake. Hutchins sets this program apart. It goes beyond all the wins and the championships, and into life impact, transcending the game. ❏ Editor John Borton has been with The Wolverine since 1991.
