INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Getting To Know Men's Track And Field Sophomore Joe Ellis Men's track and field sophomore thrower Joe Ellis holds the program record at U-M in the weight throw with a toss of 21.22 meters. The 6-1, 250-pounder is a native of Sammamish, Wash., and despite being all-state honorable mention in football in high school he came to Ann Arbor as a track athlete. Nickname: "I'm a dual-citizen with England — my par- ents are from there. I have no accent clearly, but everyone always says 'Ello chap' or whatever. It's not really a nick- name, but that's how they talk to me." Favorite Restaurant In Ann Arbor: "Is this an endorse- ment? No, personally, when I went on my recruiting visit I went to Sava's, so not only is it really good it has a personal place in my heart." Best meal he can cook by himself: "I do a pretty good steak. My teammate Grant [Cartwright] taught me how to do it to near perfection. I'll make myself a steak with a large glass of milk and then probably add some cheese and pickles. Lots of protein for me." Sports he competes in besides track: "My parents wanted me and my brothers to be very active, so I played recreational soccer for about six years; baseball; I was a swimmer. My freshman year I was going to do cross country because my brothers were long-distance runners, but I got the thrower gene so I went to football instead. I'm really involved in archery, too. I really like shooting my bow. I also like skiing, too." Hobbies: "Now that summer is getting close, me and my housemates will play some Frisbee golf, that's a big one. Gaming with Grant and the other guys is good times. We like to play spike ball and corn hole, too." Favorite TV show: "That's a hard one for me. Right now, I'm really into 'Friday Night Lights.' Overall, my favorite all-time show is probably 'Vikings.'" Favorite movie: "I have to make it a trio because I'm a huge 'Lord of the Rings' fan. If I had to pick just one it would probably be 'The Two Towers.' I have a five-by-six map of Middle Earth on my wall right now, so I'm a pretty big fan." Dream vacation: "I've had the privilege to be able to go to Europe a little bit since my parents are from England, so I would really like to go to Spain and see a soccer game there. I think that would be an awesome environment." Favorite professional athlete: "I'm a big hammer nut, so the Olympic champion, Koji Murofushi, is an awesome dude. He's obviously really good at what he does, but he's also a great guy. He does a lot of clinics and tries to help people out, so he seems like a solid human being, too." JOE ELLIS
