Brad Davison Blows Up During Spring Maple Grove (Minn.) High senior point guard Brad Davison has a strong winning background. The 6-3, 195-pound Davison played quar- terback on the football team, and helped lead Maple Grove to the state semifinals the last two years (combined 19-5 record). He also helped the school reach the state quarterfinals in basketball and finish with a 26-6 record. Davison joined the Howard Pulley travel- ing team this spring, and they are off to an 14-2 start in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, which qualified them for Nike Peach Jam July 6-10 in North Augusta, S.C. "I think it's just the teammates you sur- round yourself with," said Davison, 17. "You have to have that mindset and the confidence that you go out there playing together with your team." Davison had a terrific weekend in Hampton, Va., for the third leg of the EYBL May 13-15. He averaged 21.8 points per game, including scoring 37 points and making 5 of 7 from three-point range in a 92-91 win over Califor- nia Supreme May 14. Davison shot a blistering 11 of 23 from three-point range that weekend. He played on the ball more after star soph- omore point guard Tre Jones was injured in Hampton. The younger brother of former Duke point guard Tyus Jones had been shar- ing the playmaking duties with Davison. "It is amazing what one weekend can do for you," Davison said. "It was just my mindset. We were down players, and I had to be aggres- sive and assertive on both ends of the floor. "With Tre Jones out, and he's our primary ball handler and point guard, I had the ball in my hands more. There was more opportunities to create for myself and for my teammates." College coaches weren't in attendance, but the word of mouth proved strong. NC State offered him the morning of May 15. "I had heard from NC State a little bit before, after Indianapolis [in late April]," Da- vison said. "They said they really liked the way I played. I had talked to coach Mark Gottfried once before, and he said he was very impressed. I was still surprised by the offer. It's good to see hard work pay off." Davison talked to Gottfried and Early when he received his Wolfpack scholarship offer. "Coach Gottfried said he really liked my
