championship in the state of Min- nesota. Beaty also posted a winning record overall versus recruits that were considered four- and five-star performers. "Nick has a ton of potential," Michi- gan head coach Adam Steinberg noted. "The first time I saw him play, after five minutes, I knew I wanted him here at Michigan. He is a big lefty who has a great serve. He is somebody who can really make a difference for us. "He is a smart kid who loves the University of Michigan. I really be- lieve he is going to do great things from the start." Jacob Montague; Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.; swimming and diving — Mon- tague makes it five incoming per- formers in the top 36 nationally for men's swimming, obviously giving the Wolverines one of the top classes in the nation. He's a local product who performs for the Grosse Pointe Gators. He'll also boost the Wolverines in the breaststroke and individual med- ley specialties. At the Michigan D-II State Championships, Montague came away on top in both the 100- yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley. Additionally, he competed at the 2015 Speedo Champions Series in Indianapolis, finishing first in the 200-meter individual medley and sec- ond in the 100-meter breaststroke. Montague's best times (short course, yards) are 54.55 in the 100 breaststroke, 2:00.10 in the 200 breast- stroke and 1:46.72 in the 200 individ- ual medley. ❏ Mike Bottom is at the top of his game. His Michigan men's swimming and diving crew won its sixth straight Big Ten title this past season, prior to winding up 12th in the nation. His women's swimming and diving squad captured its first Big Ten title since 2004. In addition to juggling coaching du- ties for two varsity sports in Ann Ar- bor, he's serving as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Team, presum- ably in his spare time. He's also com- ing up on top in the recruiting game, portending more Michigan champi- onships in the future. Bottom's haul in men's recruiting for 2016-17 appears worth a double-take or two. He pulled in eight swimmers out of the top 56 prep performers in the nation, according to CollegeSwim- ming.com. That group leads all others (not in- cluding football and men's basketball, each of which have their own recruit- ing issue produced by The Wolverine) on the men's side of the talent draw. Here's a look at the top five: 1. Men's Swimming and Diving — Bottom's crew has a stranglehold on the Big Ten crown and isn't that far removed from the 2013 national title on the men's side. He continues to at- tract great depth and talent to bolster his roster in the future. This year's group features outstand- Michigan's Top Five Incoming Men's Classes
