◆ Oct. 9, 1915 — Senior Gene "Buck"
Mayer sets a school record by account-
ing for 36 points by himself in a 74-0
win over Richmond. In the process, he
scored five rushing touchdowns, tying
the still-standing school record he set
in 1912 against North Carolina. UVA fin-
ished that year 8-1 behind the halfback
Mayer, who went on to become the first
player from a southern school to be
named a consensus first-team All-Amer-
ican after running for 18 touchdowns,
a single-season record that still stands.
◆ Oct. 23, 1948 — In a 26-14 win
over VMI, the Cavaliers boast a pair of
100-yard rushers for the first time ever.
JOHN PAPIT gained 112 yards on 21
totes (5.3 yards per carry), while Grover
Jones posted the only 100-yard game
in his career, notching 104 yards on 17
tries (6.1 yards per attempt).
◆ Oct. 23, 1982 — After opening
the season 0-5, head coach George
Welsh gets his first win at UVA, a 34-27
triumph over Wake Forest at Scott Sta-
dium. The Cavs won their next game, a
37-6 victory over VMI, before falling in
the rest of their contests to finish 2-9. In
Welsh's next 18 years at the helm, UVA
won fewer than six games just once (3-8
in 1986); the College Football Hall of
Famer went on to post a school-record
134 wins in his time with the Cavs. Prior
to Welsh's arrival, the school had just
two winning campaigns in the previ-
ous 29 years and had never been to a
bowl game.
