cavalier profile PADDY FOSS Fourth-Year • Soccer Andy Warhol once said, "In the future, everyone will be world- wide famous for 15 minutes." Virginia fourth-year midfielder Paddy Foss got his 15 minutes of fame thanks to a goal he scored against Louisville on Oct. 2, 2015. With 1:35 left in a tie game, Foss unloaded a free kick from midfield that sailed over the outstretched arms of the Car- dinals' keeper and gave the Cavaliers a scintillating 3-2 victory. Not only did the play go viral, but it also was chosen as one of ESPN SportsCenter's top plays. "I was trying to put the ball forward," Foss said. "It was shock- ing to see it go in. The aftermath was a cool experience with SportsCenter picking it up. "I would say it was a lucky shot and a great experience." That Foss had the confidence and ability to put the ball on goal from midfield might be attributed in part to his holding a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. "Martial arts are a pretty disciplined activity," he said. "I've taken a lot of lessons for Tae Kwon Do. Most of them have to do with discipline. "I think it's less of the skill I've gained than it is the attitude." Having the proper discipline is of great benefit to Foss and his teammates, considering the program has won seven na- tional soccer championships, annexed 15 ACC titles and have appeared in 35 consecutive NCAA Tournaments (the longest streak in the nation). "We try to think less about the pressure and more about the expectations we put on ourselves," Foss said. "I think being part of the program is that we'll be a College Cup team year in and year out." What Foss has accomplished on the pitch is more than matched by what he's accomplished in the classroom. He graduated in three years with a government major and is pursuing a master's in higher education. "Soccer has come naturally, but to be able to balance soccer and academics has been a challenge," Foss said, "so maybe I'm more proud of my academic success." — Mike Scandura ◆ Photo courtesy UVA
