www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 7, 2016 15 UNDER THE DOME 75 Years Ago: Nov. 8, 1941 For the second year in a row in front of a capacity crowd at Baltimore's Municipal Stadium, No. 7 Notre Dame defeats No. 6 Navy on a fourth-quarter touchdown drive to break a tie. Sophomore left halfback Angelo Bertelli, who would shift to quarterback the next season in the revolutionary T-formation offense, gives Notre Dame a 13-7 halftime lead with an 18-yard scoring toss to Steve Juzwik, but Navy ties the game at 13 in the third quarter with a 65-yard interception return of a Bertelli pass (both teams missed their second extra point kick). Bertelli's passing then sets up Dippy Evans' second scoring run, from six yards out, for a 20-13 win to keep first-year head coach Frank Leahy unbeaten (6-0-1) in his first season. 50 Years Ago: Nov. 5, 1966 No. 1-ranked Notre Dame hosts Pitt as a 39-point favorite, but leads only 7-0 at halftime. The Panthers had won the open- ing coin toss and elected to defer, so Notre Dame chose to receive. When Pitt is given the option to kick off or receive in the second half, it inexplicably, in a major blunder, opts to kick off. Senior Irish halfback Nick Eddy then returns the kick for an 85-yard touchdown (his second TD run- back in only four tries all season). Notre Dame's special teams then make it 21-0 when Tom Schoen returns a punt for a 63-yard tally. The Irish end up covering the spread with a 40-0 victory. 30 Years Ago: Nov. 8, 1986 With the first and still only NCAA "death penalty" looming around the corner that would cancel its entire 1987 and 1988 foot- ball seasons, 5-3 SMU visits 3-4 Notre Dame and suffers a 61-29 defeat to an emerging Irish team under first-year head coach Lou Holtz. Dallas native Tim Brown, recruited illegally by SMU in 1984, catches four passes for 176 yards, highlighted by an 84-yard touchdown toss from quarterback Steve Beuerlein (11- of-20 passing for 269 yards), and carries seven times for 37 yards, including a 15- yard score. The 615 yards of total offense are the most by Notre Dame in nine years, and senior John Carney's four field goals tie a school record. 20 Years Ago: Nov. 2, 1996 Despite being a thousand miles away from their campus, the Fighting Irish are truly at home during their 54-27 victory versus Navy at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland. For only the second ever, the Notre Dame varsity football team plays on foreign soil, with the first occurring in the 1979 regular-season finale at Tokyo, Japan, a 40-15 win over Miami. A total of 38,651 fans — about half of them Irish natives — witness the first non-Gaelic football or hurling event in the stadium. Notre Dame rushes for 303 yards, led by sophomore Autry Denson's 16 carries for 123 yards. Senior fullback Marc Edwards scores three of the team's six rushing touchdowns, and the floodgates open when defensive end Renaldo Wynn scores on a 24-yard fumble return to give the Irish a 28-7 cushion in the third quarter. The victory also extends Notre Dame's winning streak against Navy to 33 games, snapping the NCAA record of 32 previously held by Oklahoma over Kansas State. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 2‑8 NOTRE DAME Great Gifts for the Little Fans! *Please add sales tax if shipping to: IN (7%), MI (6%), and NC (7.5%) DELIVERY LIMITED TO CONTINENTAL U.S. BLUE AND GOLD ILLUSTRATED PO BOX 2331 • DURHAM, NC 27702 800-421-7751 www.BlueGoldOnline.com Future Tailgater Collection CLEARANCE Limited Supply FREE SHIPPING! #6270 Onesie Romper $13.95 #6271 Onesie Dress $15.95 #6273 Football Onesie & Cap Set $19.95 • 5-Position headrest accommodates growth • Approved for forward-facing use with children ages 4-12 (30-110 lbs.) • BONUS!!
