40 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ 2017 FOOTBALL RECRUITING ISSUE BY MATT CARTER F rom late December through Na- tional Signing Day, NC State picked up six verbal commitments but also lost a pair, while filling out its 20-player recruiting class. National Signing Day has become less dramatic over the years for NC State, but that was not the case this time. When head coach Dave Doeren finished his press conference, he went over 19 signees. No. 20 came about an hour after he wrapped up his Q&A with the assembled group of reporters. The late addition was defensive tackle Larrell Murchison, ending an unusual jour- ney to Raleigh for the Elizabethtown, N.C., native. He was a former multi-sport athlete at East Bladen High, playing football, basketball and "a little bit of baseball," he noted. His original intention was to head to Winston- Salem State to play college football with his twin brother Farrell. But for academic reasons, he needed to go to a junior college first. The only one in the state of North Carolina with a football program was Louisburg College. Murchison began to blossom at Louis- burg. This past year, he was selected a Ju- nior College All-American after piling up 41 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks for 9-0 Louisburg. He also forced a fumble. That led to official visits in January to Texas, Ole Miss and Georgia, quite the leap from his days coming out of East Bladen. He had verbally committed to Ole Miss, but NC State began to communicate with him in the week leading up to National Signing Day. "I'm home," Murchison simply said. "I get to be at home, and I feel like that's the best place for me." The Pack recruited the 6-4, 277-pounder to play a three-technique defensive tackle. He will have three years to play two, but Murchison made it clear his preference will be to get on the field as soon as possible for the Wolfpack. He also quickly brought into the vision Doeren provided. "It really came together when I talked to coach Dave Doeren," Murchison stated. "He really explained a lot of things to me. I trust him, and I feel like he can make things hap- pen at NC State. "We are going to make it happen." Murchison was one of four defensive line- men that committed to NC State since the Montvale (N.J.) St. Joseph Regional teammates Louis Acceus (left), a linebacker, and Joshua Fedd-Jackson, an offensive lineman, took their official visit to Raleigh together and both committed Jan. 14.
