www.BLUEANDGOLD.com MAY 2017 57 ND SPORTS BASEBALL (18-22, 8-13 ACC) After starting the season 3-11, Notre Dame rebounded to win 15 of its next 26 games. As of April 24, the longest win streak of the season was five. The Irish swept a three-game home series with Georgia Tech and then picked up wins over Michigan State and Toledo in a stretch of games from April 7-12. Notre Dame has three-game series remaining with Duke April 28-30, Lou- isville May 5-7, non-conference foe Austin Peay April 12-14 and at Boston College May 18-20 before the end of the regular season. MEN'S GOLF Notre Dame finished 10th out of 12 teams at the ACC Championship April 21-22 in Clinton, S.C. The Irish shot a 36-over-par 900 over 54 holes, 50 shots behind league champion Duke. The high finisher for the Irish was senior Matthew Rushton, who carded a 7-over 223 to tie for 30th. MEN'S LACROSSE (7-3, 2-2 ACC) The No. 6 Irish earned their second ACC win of the season April 22 with a 14-13 home victory over No. 16 North Carolina. The decisive goal in the game came from freshman midfielder Bryan Costabile with 2:44 to go in regulation. It was the second one-goal ACC win for the Irish (they also notched an 11-10 overtime win at Virginia March 18). The Irish were set to face No. 3 Duke in the semifinals of the ACC Tourna- ment April 28 in in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils defeated the Irish 11-8 in the team's first meeting April 8. Notre Dame was also slated to play at Army West Point May 6 before learning if it'll get a bid to the NCAA Tournament. WOMEN'S LACROSSE (11-6, 4-3 ACC) The No. 11 Irish won three of their final five matches of the regular season, including a pair of league contests, en route to earning the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament. Notre Dame won 16-7 at Syracuse March 26 and topped Virginia Tech 13-9 at home April 15. Notre Dame was matched up with No. 5 seed Boston College in the quar- terfinals of the ACC Tournament April 27 at Richmond, Va. The Irish fell 16-10 to the Eagles in their only meeting of the season April 22. MEN'S TENNIS (13-12, 4-8 ACC) Notre Dame struggled during the first three weeks of April, posting a 3-5 overall mark during that stretch. At one point, the Irish dropped three con- secutive ACC matches from April 9-16, falling 4-3 at Miami, 4-3 at Duke and 6-1 at North Carolina. However, the Irish did pick up a 6-1 win over Clemson April 21, before falling 5-2 to No. 1 Wake Forest April 23. The 10th-seeded Irish were slated to face seventh-seeded Louisville in the second round of the ACC Championships April 27 in Rome, Ga. WOMEN'S TENNIS (16-8, 7-7 ACC) The Irish opened the season 16-3 overall and 7-2 in the ACC, but struggled throughout the month of April. Notre Dame dropped its last five matches of the regular season, all to ACC opponents, including three straight shutouts. In those five matches, Notre Dame was outscored 28-4 by its opponents. The losing skid dropped Notre Dame down to the 10th seed in the league tournament. The Irish were scheduled to take on 15th-seeded Pittsburgh in the first round of the ACC Championships April 26 in Rome, Ga. TRACK AND FIELD Notre Dame performed well at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas, and the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., both of which took place April 23. At the Johnson Invitational, senior Anthony Shivers recorded a 66.21-me- ter hammer throw, breaking his own school record by 0.61 meters. Senior Nathan Richartz, the reigning ACC Men's Field Performer of the Week, had another strong performance, finishing first in the pole vault with a jump of 5.41 meters. In Virginia, graduate student Danielle Aragon captured the gold in the women's 1,500 meters with a time of 4:15.65. Junior Jessica Harris took third in the same race while setting a new school record in the 800 (2:03.23). Both Harris and Aragon were nationally ranked in the 1,500 meters as of April 24. Aragon was No. 10, while Harris came in at No. 17. SOFTBALL (27-18, 11-10 ACC) The Irish started the month of April off in strong fashion, taking two of three games from both Louisville April 1-3 and North Carolina April 8-9 before sweeping a three-game set from North Carolina State April 14-15. However, the Irish dropped all three games of their home series versus Virginia April 22-23. Notre Dame had non-league games scheduled at Northwestern April 25, versus Arkansas April 29-30 and against Butler May 5, before closing the season by hosting a three-game series with Boston College May 5-7.
