www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 20, 2017 15 UNDER THE DOME 70 Years Ago: Nov. 22, 1947 For the first time in 26 years, No. 1-ranked Notre Dame scores five touchdowns in one quarter while jumping to a 32-0 first-quarter lead against SEC member Tulane (who would be the league champ two years later) en route to 59-6 victory. It would be the largest margin of victory under head coach Frank Leahy in his 11 seasons at Notre Dame — except Leahy is not at the game while recovering from an illness. Acting head coach Ed "Moose" Krause sees Tulane lose two fumbles off kickoffs in the first quarter. Halfbacks Emil Sitko and Terry Brennan score twice apiece, while Bill Gompers adds a 37-yard scoring run within the game's initial 15 minutes. The final Irish touchdown late in the game is tallied by fifth- team halfback Jim Brennan, Terry's brother. The Irish would not surpass this single quarter point total until 49 years later on Nov. 16, 1996, when it would rack up 40 second-quarter points in a 60-6 victory at home versus Pitt. 40 Years Ago: Nov. 19, 1977 After a 49-0 victory versus Air Force in the home finale, No. 6 Notre Dame accepts an invitation to play No. 1 Texas on Jan. 2, 1978 in the Cotton Bowl. It would be the third time in nine seasons the Fighting Irish would face a No. 1 Longhorns team in Dallas. Both 10-0 Texas and 9-1 Notre Dame have one more regular season game remaining on the road — the Longhorns at Texas A&M and the Irish at Miami — so it's not assured yet that the game will be for the national title. In the win over the Falcons, running back Vagas Ferguson scores three touchdowns, including 56 yards on Notre Dame's first play from scrimmage, while Joe Montana completes 11 of 15 passes for 172 yards with a touchdown to Kris Haines. 5 Years Ago: Nov. 17, 2012 For the first time ever, the No. 3 Fighting Irish leave a game at Notre Dame Stadium with an 11-0 record, following a 38-0 victory versus Wake Forest. The Irish rack up 584 yards of total offense, with quarterback Everett Golson completing 20 of 30 passes for 356 yards and touchdown tosses to Tyler Eifert, TJ Jones and John Goodman, while Cierre Wood's 11 carries net 150 yards, highlighted by a 68- yard touchdown. The No. 1-ranked defense, led by linebacker Manti Te'o, also continues its dominance while allowing only 10.1 points per game during the 11-0 start. The real seismic events occur later that evening. No. 1 Kansas State gets crushed 52-24 at Baylor, while No. 2 Oregon is stunned 17-14 at home in overtime by Stanford. That means for the first time in 19 years, since Nov. 20, 1993, Notre Dame is once again the No. 1 team in the land. The previous longest drought from the summit by the Irish since the start of the As- sociated Press poll in 1936 was the 10 years from Oct. 3, 1954 until Nov. 1, 1964. Four years earlier on Nov. 22, 2008, the Hawaiian native Te'o took his official visit to Notre Dame and, in frigid conditions, saw the Irish lose to 2-8 Syracuse and watched the team get booed after the alma mater was played. A year earlier, the Irish had lost their most games ever in a season (nine). "Just magic," Te'o said of a gloriously warm day after celebrating his final home game with the student body. "Like everything's come full circle." — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 17‑23 2017 Holiday Gift Guide I L L U S T R A T E D For Dozens Of Great Gift Ideas, Visit BlueGoldOnline.com BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED PO Box 2331 • Durham, NC 27702 1-800-421-7751 www.BlueGoldOnline.com Please add sales tax if shipping to: NC (7.5%), MI (6%), or IN (7%) Not Dame Watch by BULOVA Item #6483 $ 229 95 FREE S&H • Rectangular grey dial with stick markers • Sweeping "seconds" hand • Silver-tone case • Steel bracelet • Water resistant to 100 feet • Large blue ND logo • 3-year Bulova limited warranty • Packaged in an elegant display box All-American linebacker Manti Te'o came full circle after the 38-0 win over Wake Forest in 2012 lifted Notre Dame to No. 1.
