www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 20, 2017 51 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Ogunbowale, and junior Young. McGraw's Comments: "We look for her to come in and really take over as the point guard. She's just got to handle it as a freshman, somewhat like Lindsay [Allen] and Skylar had to do. … She's got a great IQ — she's also going to be a pre-med major. She's really smart and just has a great sense of how to get the ball to the right people." DANIELLE COSGROVE 6-4 • Holbrook, N.Y. ESPNHoopGurlz: No. 13 post and No. 67 overall prospect in the land. Prospects Nation: No. 20 post and No. 98 overall player in the country. Cosgrove was the leading scorer at Sachem East High School each of the past three seasons, averaging a double-double as a junior with 17.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. She was elected to the New York State Sportswriters Association Class AA All-State fourth team. She also plays for the Philadel- phia Belles — as did current 6-3 Irish freshman Mikayla Vaughn — and in 2016, participated alongside her fel- low Irish class of 2018 signees at the USA U17 National Team Trials. Her high-post passing abilities might be comparable coming out of high school to current 6-2 senior Kathryn Westbeld and Shepard. Cos- grove does not arrive with the same fanfare as the two former McDon- ald's All-Americans, but she pos- sesses the qualities to be an effective stretch-four player. McGraw Comments: "She's 6-4 and can shoot threes — a really good shooter. I love her in the Princeton offense. She's a high-post player that can pass and score, and we can al- ways use that. I'm excited to see her in the offense and what we're doing with her size, and her ability to pass and rebound." Because Notre Dame has only one sophomore (Young) and two fresh- men (Vaughn and Patterson) on the roster, it will look to sign about four more prospects next season to re- plenish the roster. McGraw remains adamant that she will never sign the full four-year allotment of 15 because of team chemistry issues and won't go higher than 12 (if that). The 2019 class has a verbal from 5-10 Anaya Peoples, ranked No. 4 over- all by Prospects Nation (No. 1 point guard) and No. 15 by HoopGurlz. Virginia's 6-2 Samantha Brunelle, ranked No. 1 overall by HoopGurlz and No. 3 by Prospects Nation in the 2019 class, visited Notre Dame for the Oct. 28 North Carolina State football game. ✦ Call 877-630-8768 to advertise in Blue & Gold Illustrated! Junior guard Arike Ogunbowale tallied a game-high 21 points and became the 37th player in the program's history to reach the 1,000-point career scoring mark. She also hauled in seven rebounds and handed out four assists. Junior forward Jessica Shepard finished with a double-double, recording 18 points and 11 rebounds — which pretty much mirrored her averages her first two seasons at Nebraska when she was a two-time All-Big Ten selection before transferring to Notre Dame. Also finishing with double-digit scoring were junior guard Marina Mabrey (18 points), sophomore guard Jackie Young (16), freshman forward Danielle Patterson (11) and fifth-year senior point guard Lili Thompson (10, to go with eight assists and only one turnover). Freshman forward Mikayla Vaughn had nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks, and senior forward Kathryn Westbeld — limited this preseason while resting an ankle injury — was inserted for 10 minutes and finished with six points, four rebounds and two assists. — Lou Somogyi With her 6-4 frame, Danielle Cosgrove will add size to the Irish lineup, but also is effective in the high post and as an outside shooter.
