MARCH 2018 ■ 47 ■ FOOTBALL RECRUITING Thomas' older brother Thayer Thomas is a walk-on redshirt freshman wide re- ceiver at NC State. Clemson and Michigan are likely NC State's top competition for Thomas, who is rated by Rivals.com as the No. 18 recruit in the state and the No. 17 inside linebacker in the country. Other notable targets: Four-star Osi Ekwonu from Charlotte Providence Day and three-star Jaylon Scott from Shelby (N.C.) High. Cornerback Early target to watch: NC State offered three-star Shyheim Battle from Rocky Mount (N.C.) High long before he became a hot prospect with added offers in Febru- ary from Clemson, North Carolina, Tennes- see and Virginia. The 6-2, 170-pound Battle had 31 tackles and three passes broken up as a junior. He was a frequent visitor last fall at NC State home games and was back on campus in January for a junior day and then again at the first day of spring practice. Rivals.com ranks Battle as the No. 32 prospect in the state. Other notable targets: Four-star Tyus Fields from Cornelius (N.C.) Hough High, three-star Jalen Frazier from Cornelius (N.C.) Hough High and three-star Isaiah Kemp from Wilmington (N.C.) New Ha- nover High. Safety Early target to watch: Three-star J.R. Walker from Elizabeth City (N.C.) North- eastern High rushed for 1,019 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior, but defense is his probable future. The 6-1, 200-pounder had 73 tackles and seven picks on that side of the ball last season. NC State is one of Walker's early favor- ites, and he was on campus for the junior day Feb. 24. He also has offers from Clem- son, Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. Rivals.com rates Walker as the No. 15 player in the state and the No. 36 athlete in the nation. Other notable targets: Four-star An- thony Harris from Havelock (N.C.) High and three-star Khalid Martin from Kerner- sville (N.C.) East Forsyth High. ■ James A.
