Under the Dome
guard Bob Golic records 17
tackles and blocks a field goal
to pace the attack.
During that same afternoon,
No. 3 Alabama stakes its claim
to No. 1 after clobbering 9-2
and No. 8 Ohio State, 35-6,
in the Sugar Bowl. One of its
arguments is whereas Notre
Dame lost in week two to
Mississippi (20-13), Alabama
whipped the Rebels 34-13 to
open its season.
The No. 2 and 10-1 Oklahoma Sooners (with their
lone loss to Texas) also believe they can make a case for
the national title by beating
10-1 Arkansas in the Orange
Bowl. The Sooners are heavily favored to destroy the Razorbacks, whose head coach,
Lou Holtz, suspended three of
their top players on offense.
Instead, Arkansas stuns
Oklahoma with a 31-6 demolition.
The next day, though, Notre
Dame wins both the Associated Press and UPI polls by
nearly a two-to-one margin.
In the AP, Notre Dame receives 37 first-place votes, Alabama 19, Arkansas five and
Texas two. One voter splits
his vote into thirds among
the Irish, Crimson Tide and
Razorbacks.
In the UPI, Notre Dame receives 23 first-place votes, Alabama 13 and Arkansas two.
