ND Sports Womens Soccer (16-6-2) The Irish womens less-likely run through the NCAA Tournament led them to the quarterfinal round before they lost to Florida State. The Seminoles Kelsey Wys scored in the second half to hand Notre Dame a 1-0 loss. The Irish upset Wake Forest and Florida in back-to-back games to reach the matchup with Florida State. The future is bright for the womens team, which returns all but two players and brings in a 12-woman freshman class next year. Volleyball (20-10) Notre Dame earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, but bowed out in the first round against No. 14 Ohio State. The Buckeyes swept the Irish in three straight sets to end the Irish season on a fourgame losing streak. Notre Dame was upset by South Florida in four sets in the first game of the Big East Tournament and took the University of Ohio to five sets before losing in an exhibition after the conference season ended. That losing streak came at the end of an 11-game winning streak that got the Irish within one game of the regular-season conference crown and gave the team its first 20-win season since 2009. The year ended on a personal high note for sophomores Jeni Houser and Toni Alugbue. They both made the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region team. Indoor Track Notre Dame started its indoor season in dominant fashion during the first week of December. Fortyfour members of the Irish team posted times, heights and distances strong enough to guarantee a spot in the Big East Championship meet that is still months away. The men and women combined to win 26 of the 33 events at the Blue & Gold Invitational in South Bend. Sophomore sisters Kaila and Jade Barber took first and second place, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. Jade also won the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, qualifying for the conference meet in all three races. Defending Big East champ Logan Renwick, a junior, won the triple jump and also qualified with a third-place finish in the long jump. Dan Murphy EE FsRincluded s acce nt for all pri rs bscribe su Get the iPad app for Blue & Gold Illustrated We have redesigned our online edition of Blue & Gold Illustrated to be easily readable on an iPad tablet!
