48 THE WOLVERINE SEPTEMBER 2022   FOOTBALL RECRUITING evaluation period. Sacca received some early looks as a safety but best projects as a linebacker at the next level. St. Joseph's is one of the premier pro- grams in the region, so it's definitely a positive that Newsome jumped on Sacca right away. Sacca's father, Tony, played quarterback at Penn State (1988-91) and was a second-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals. CB CHRIS EWALD, 6-0, 161 Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade- Madonna (90) It may be early in the process, but Michigan is already a favorite in the recruitment of Ewald. The Wolverines have already hosted him for three unof- ficial visits, including one this summer, and are expected to get him back for a game this fall. Michigan co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale has made it clear that Ewald is a top priority, but he will have to fend off programs like Georgia, Mi- ami and Texas A&M. CB DEVIN SANCHEZ, 6-2, 160 Galena Park (Texas) North Shore (90) Michigan offered Sanchez during its swing through the Houston-area during the spring evaluation period. While he also holds offers from Alabama, Okla- homa, Texas and other southern pro- grams, the Wolverines made an early impression and a visit in the near future could be in the cards. At 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, Sanchez is a tall, long corner that plays against the very best competition for Texas power- house North Shore. S DJ PICKETT, 6-2, 170 Zephyrhills (Fla.) High (90) Clinkscale extended an offer to Pick- ett last November and got him on cam- pus for an unofficial visit in June. Along with Michigan, Pickett also holds of- fers from Florida, Ohio State, LSU and others, so expect this one to be a true national recruitment. However, Pickett enjoyed his first trip to Ann Arbor and is already developing a strong relationship with Clinkscale and the rest of the staff. S ANQUON FEGANS, 6-1, 180 Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson (90) M i c h i ga n d e fe n s ive co o rd i n a to r Jesse Minter put an offer on the ta- ble for Fegans in May, when he made a swing through Alabama during the spring evaluation period. Minter has ties throughout the Southeast and isn't afraid to go after the biggest of fish. However, pulling Fegans out of Al- abama powerhouse Thompson will likely prove to be difficult. Alabama and Texas A&M are already considered the favorites. ATH DERICK SMITH, 6-2, 190 Selma (Ala.) Southside (91) Michigan also threw its hat in the ring for another elite talent out of Alabama in Smith. At 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, Smith is listed as an athlete and plays both wide receiver and safety at the next level. Bellamy is leading the way here so far but will face stiff competition from SEC powers like Alabama, Auburn and Geor- gia. This one is set to be an uphill battle for the Wolverines. ATH DIERRE HILL, 5-11, 180 St. Louis Vashon (91) Hill is another prospect that area re- cruiter Jay Harbaugh made sure to offer during his swing through St. Louis. Hill plays mostly running back at the high school level but doesn't have a defined position just yet. At 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, Hill dou- bles as an explosive basketball player and has a huge ceiling. Michigan was one of his first offers, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him make his way to Ann Arbor for a visit this fall. ❏ Safety DJ Pickett from Zephyrhills (Fla.) High enjoyed his first visit to Ann Arbor in June. In addition to U-M, he holds offers from Florida, Ohio State, LSU and other top schools.
