SEPTEMBER 2023 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 13 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Forward Sammi Woods is one of four seniors set to lead the Wolverines this fall. Woods set the pace for the Maize and Blue with 7 goals and also tied for the team lead with 15 points last season, playing in 18 matches with 17 starts. She's totaled 16 goals and 8 assists (40 points) during her career. Here are some things about Woods that you may not have known: Best Aspect Of Being From Saline, Mich.: "The dis- tance. It doesn't feel like I'm that close, but if I need some- thing it's a 10-minute drive away. I love having the option [to be close to home] without feeling suffocated." Favorite Restaurant In Ann Arbor: "Sava's for a nice dinner." Best Meal She Can Cook By Herself: "A homemade chicken pesto mozzarella sandwich, panini pressed on some good bread." Favorite Professional Athlete: "[Former U.S. Women's National Soccer Team star] Carli Lloyd. I've always admired her work rate. She never beats around the bush; she puts her head down and works, and it's paid off a ton for her." Sport She Enjoys Playing Besides Soccer: "I'm a fan of a lot of sports, whether it's pickup or just messing around. I d i d p l ay vo l l eyb a l l growing up. Cornhole is my go-to hangout with people. I have a lot of fun with that." Favorite Television Show: "'Friends.' Hands down. It's my comfort show." Fa v o r i t e M o v i e : "'Top Gun' — but the first one. The second is also great, but you can't beat the original." W h y S h e C h o s e M i c h i ga n : " G row i n g up around here, it's hard not to be a Michigan fan. Always being in that fan base was obviously a huge factor, and it was on my radar since the beginning of my recruiting process. And then, I didn't want to limit myself, so I looked other places, but when it came down to it — with the staff and the whole feel and the atmosphere and the campus here — it was a pretty clear choice." What She Hopes To Do After Michigan: "I'm studying psychology and will graduate in the spring. Right now, I'm pretty set on going to get my master's and get my CMPCC, which is my certification for mental performance. My dream would be to go work with a college team or a pro team and help out with the tactics of mental performance — like prep- aration for practice or games, or tactics and techniques you can use. I could not not see myself working around sports for the rest of my life." Favorite Memory At Michigan: "The Big Ten champi- onship [in 2021]. That whole year in itself was honestly crazy. We hit a point where we flipped the switch in that season, and the rest from there … I can't even put into words how great it was." Overall Experience At Michigan: "It's been everything I wanted, really, since I was a kid. Michigan is a lot of kids' dreams, academically but also to play on a sports team. Being part of the athletic community is something that not a lot of people get to do, and I'm very, very fortunate for that. But the people I've met here are some of my best friends that'll stay for my life." — Clayton Sayfie ❱ Getting To Know Women's Soccer Senior Sammi Woods Woods enters her senior year with 16 goals and 8 assists in her career.
