30 THE WOLVERINE ❱ SEPTEMBER 2023 Michigan's depth chart is a "living organism" that will likely change before the opener, but here's a projection of where things stand more than two weeks into fall camp: QUARTERBACK No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 9 J.J. McCarthy 6-3 202 Jr./2 16 Davis Warren 6-2 195 Jr./3 Note: There's no competition with McCarthy for the starting job, but a backup battle is raging on between Warren, gradu- ate Jack Tuttle and sophomore Alex Orji. From what we've gleaned, Warren is currently in the lead. RUNNING BACK No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 2 Blake Corum 5-8 213 Sr./2 7 Donovan Edwards 6-1 210 Jr./2 Note: Corum and Edwards will both play an amount of snaps resembling a starter, but the former has the edge by default. Edwards can also line up at slot or wide receiver and recently said "the best 11 players will be on the field." WIDE RECEIVER No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 6 Cornelius Johnson 6-3 208 Gr./1 0 Darrius Clemons 6-3 212 So./3 Note: Junior Cristian Dixon is also one to watch as a depth chart riser. Head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed midway through camp that Clemons had missed some time with "a few nagging things" but returned to practice Aug. 14. Johnson is all but locked in as the starter at the "X" position. WIDE RECEIVER No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 14 Roman Wilson 6-0 192 Sr./2 81 Peyton O'Leary 6-3 200 Jr./3 Note: Freshman Fredrick Moore, who impressed in the spring game, is also taking reps here and could play early. Wilson is versatile, with the ability to play both on the outside and in the slot. O'Leary also had a strong spring and is looking to break out. SLOT RECEIVER No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 8 Tyler Morris 5-11 185 So./3 5 Karmello English 5-11 190 Fr./4 Note: Morris appears to have a lead as the starting slot re- ceiver, and there are a host of players behind him, including English, freshman Semaj Morgan and senior Eamonn Den- nis. Others, like the freshman Moore, could also slide into the slot. TIGHT END No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 18 Colston Loveland 6-5 245 So./3 89 A.J. Barner 6-6 251 Sr./2 Note: The way we see it is that Loveland and Barner are es- sentially co-starters and will be on the field together much of the time. Senior Matthew Hibner, sophomore Marlin Klein and junior Max Bredeson will also have roles. LEFT TACKLE No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 52 Karsen Barnhart 6-5 316 Gr./2 73 LaDarius Henderson 6-4 315 Gr./1 Note: Harbaugh said, through the first half of fall camp, Barn- hart had been the most impressive tackle. However, the battle isn't over — not even close — with the head coach saying one will likely start the first game and the other the second contest. LEFT GUARD No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 77 Trevor Keegan 6-6 320 Gr./2 58 Giovanni El-Hadi 6-5 318 Jr./3 Note: Keegan is clearly the starter, but El-Hadi is more than capable and opened three contests last season. CENTER No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 60 Drake Nugent 6-2 301 Gr./2 51 Greg Crippen 6-4 309 Jr./3 Note: Nugent has an edge, but Harbaugh said the battle with Crippen could go into the season, like at the tackle spots. RIGHT GUARD No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 65 Zak Zinter 6-6 322 Sr./2 75 Andrew Gentry 6-7 327 So./4 Note: Zinter is cemented as the first man up at right guard, with Gentry appearing to be next in line now. Gentry is "so good," Harbaugh said, that either tackle or guard spot is an option for him to play. RIGHT TACKLE No. Player Ht. Wt. Cl./Elig. Remaining 53 Trente Jones 6-4 325 Gr./2 78 Myles Hinton 6-6 340 Sr./2 Note: The competition at right tackle could also push into the early portion of the schedule. Given his experience with the U-M system, we've pegged Jones as having the advantage, but Hinton is pushing hard. — Clayton Sayfie The Wolverine's 2023 Projected Depth Chart — Offense W A N T W E E K L Y D E P T H C H A R T S ?
