48 THE WOLVERINE ❱ SEPTEMBER 2023 ❱ MICHIGAN RECRUITING NOTEBOOK said. "He's 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, and he can do a 360-degree dunk. He has incred- ible get-off and reach. "When he wants to get his arm out and extend, there isn't much offensive tack- les can do, especially at the high school level. When he puts that athleticism and strength to use, he can be pretty unstop- pable." While Nichols is likely to follow in the path of guys like Aidan Hutchinson and Mike Morris, Stein actually likened him to a different former Michigan great — David Ojabo. "Michigan is obviously an incredible program," Stein said. "I've followed them since I was a kid. They only recruit the best players in the country, so that's kudos to him. "Over the last two or three years, I'm not sure many programs have had better defensive linemen than Michigan. If that's a place where if you're trying to get devel- oped and get to the NFL, it's a good fit. "He's a lot like Ojabo with the length and athleticism. Ojabo was more raw than Hutchinson and got better and better. I think Dom's best football is way ahead of him." — EJ Holland FOUR-STAR EDGE DECOMMITS Four-star Deerfield Beach (Fla.) High edge rusher Elias Rudolph backed out of his verbal commitment to Michigan and flipped to Miami Aug. 12. Rudolph originally committed to U-M in early July and seemed happy with his decision. However, Miami never stopped pursuing him. The Hurricanes hosted Ru- dolph for their big recruiting event July 29, and that was where Miami made its move. The loss of Rudolph leaves Michigan with three edge recruits this cycle — Brandywine (Md.) Gwynn Park four-star Devon Baxter (the No. 28 edge nationally according to the On3 Industry Ranking), four-star Corbin (Ky.) High prospect Ja- cob Smith (No. 18 edge in the country) and three-star Ijamsville (Md.) Oakdale prospect Dominic Nichols (the No. 45 de- fensive lineman in the land). Michigan will need to fight to keep Smith and Nichols in the class. Smith visited Kentucky twice in July, while Clemson and Wisconsin have continued to keep in touch with Nichols. — EJ Holland 2024 MICHIGAN COMMITMENTS Player Rating Pos. Ht. Wt.
