Under the Dome Tony Alford Suffers Loss Of Brother Notre Dame running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Tony Alford was temporarily excused from his duties Aug. 12 when it was learned that his younger brother, Aaron, died from a heart attack at age 39. An assistant coach for the Utah Utes from 200710, Aaron Alford was at Notre Dame Stadium Nov. 13, 2010, when his older brother helped the Irish post a 28-3 victory against the No. 15 Utes to begin a dramatic turnaround in head coach Brian Kelly's first season. The younger Alford was the athletics director at Park City (Utah) High, where he also served as an assistant football coach. In addition, he was the executive director at New Beginnings Behavioral Treatment Agency, which concentrated on youths who struggle with home life. Alford leaves behind his wife and three children, including a son, Eli, who played football at Park City. An Early End To 2014 Spring Notre Dame will have its earliest Blue-Gold Game ever when it plays April 12, 2014. There are two reasons for the early ending. First, Easter Sunday in 2014 won't be until April 20, so the university didn't want the to host BlueGold Game on Holy Saturday (April 19). Second, the last day of classes prior to final exams is April 30, so having the game on AprilĀ 26 was getting too close to exam week. Up until the early 1980s, the Blue-Gold Game used to be the first Saturday of May, coinciding with the Kentucky Derby. It was then moved to the last Saturday of April, and more recently to the second to last Saturday of April. Everett Golson Staying In Touch Erstwhile Irish starting quarterback Everett Golson has remained in regular contact with his coaches since leaving school in May. Head coach Brian Kelly said he talks to Golson regularly, and offensive coordinator Chuck Martin talked to his pupil on almost a daily basis during the summer. Kelly said there would be a plan in place to help Golson get the grades he needs to get back into Notre Dame in January. The coach didn't say where Golson would be attending classes this fall. "We expect him back in January. There will Notre Dame's coaching staff is keeping in touch with be a plan in place. It's still in flux right now," would-be junior Everett Golson during his semester Kelly said at the opening of fall camp. "There will be a plan that fits his needs, what's best for of exile from the team and campus. photo by joe raymond him in terms of the environment that he's in."
