U-M's Problems:
Real Or Imagined?
ollowing the Maize
and Blue's 28‑24
victory over Akron
in week three, we asked
subscribers on TheWolverine.
com what emerging concern
worried them the most —
Michigan's anemic pass
rush, its struggles running
the football, the team's soft
coverage in the secondary or
redshirt junior signal-caller
Devin Gardner's erratic
decision-making?
The line play on both
sides of the ball appears
to be a very real concern
going forward, and should
have significant impact on
whether the Wolverines
contend for a Big Ten title or
see their dreams evaporate in
a three-game stretch in early
November.
By then, with games
against Minnesota, Penn
State and Indiana, we should
know if U-M's problems are
real or imagined.
Lack of a pass rush —
Real: A year ago, Michigan
ranked 78th nationally with
1.69 sacks per game (just
22 on the year), but in the
spring and summer, the
excitement grew that the
Redshirt junior quarterback Devin Gardner, who tossed
eight interceptions in U-M's first four games, will need
to stop playing so recklessly for the Wolverines to have
success.
