2 Consecutive seasons (2012-13) Notre Dame defeated at least three teams in the final Associated Press poll — a first by the program since 1989-90. This year the Fighting Irish de- feated No. 3 Michigan State (17-13), No. 19 USC (14-10) and No. 21 Arizona State (37-34). In 2012, they vanquished No. 7 Stanford (20-13 in overtime), No. 15 Oklahoma (30-13) and No. 24 Michigan (13-6). 4 Notre Dame seniors — offensive lineman Bruce Heggie, quarterback A N D R E W HENDRIX, tight end Alex Welch and cor- nerback Lo Wood — who will use their fifth season of eligibility elsewhere in 2014. Heggie departed for Ball State, while Hendrix, Welch and Wood left for Miami (Ohio) to play under new RedHawks head coach Chuck Martin, an Irish assistant from 2010-13. Because they have their degrees, each is eligible to play right away. This isn't the first time three former Irish players went with a former coach. Quarterback Dayne Crist, tight end Mike Ragone and linebacker Anthony McDonald played for Charlie Weis at Kansas in 2012. That same year, former Irish offensive coordi- nator Charley Molnar (2010-11) started wide receiver Deion Walker and defensive tackle Hafis Williams at UMass. 5 Straight wins by Notre Dame men's basketball over top-10 teams in the Purcell Pavilion, most recently against then- No. 7 Duke (79-77) Jan. 4. The victory also snapped Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski's 18-0 all-time record against his former assistants. Irish head coach Mike Brey was at Duke from 1987-95. 8 Players in history who kicked an NCAA record five field goals in a bowl game — with Notre Dame junior Kyle Brindza the most recent, versus Rutgers in the Dec. 28 Pinstripe Bowl. The first was Maryland's Jeff Atkin- son in the 1983 Florida Citrus Bowl, and the second was Florida's Arden Czyzewski in a 39-28 Sugar Bowl loss to the Fighting Irish on Jan. 1, 1992.
