As far as conference scheduling goes, Brey hopes next year's slate in- cludes an off date during the week or one weekend, something the early league game could help bring about. The Irish did not have any vacant spots on the schedule after beginning ACC play against Duke Jan. 4. "I wonder if that's a case of us be- ing plugged into the matrix as the last team [when the university joined the ACC in] February," Brey said. "That may help us, though. We've had to steal some time. … It's no secret that for us [the conference tournament] will be very important. To almost have a stretch of training camp before you go to Greensboro, N.C., is probably a good thing right now to rest and what we want to do differently. "I often wonder if it's the result of, 'Let's give them the bye there. That's all we have left.' You do what you do." RECRUITING UPDATE Head coach Mike Brey admitted that the combination of learning a new league and the team's struggles and inexperience have prevented him from recruiting as much as he desires. "The assistant coaches have gotten out a bit," Brey said. "I've been stay- ing in touch with guys, texting, call- ing, but haven't been able to see them. … The nice thing about the change in calendar is you do have the April weekends [to recruit] now. "So I can always close the gap when we get back in the swing of things. These [assistants] have been sneak- ing out, seeing some people. We've got scholarships. They're open to any- thing." Notre Dame hosted four-star guard Jalen Coleman at Purcell Pavilion dur- ing the 73-62 loss to North Carolina Feb. 8. Coleman — the No. 38 over- all recruit in the 2015 class, the No. 9 point guard in the country and the top prospect in Indiana, according to 247Sports — plays at La Lumiere High School in La Porte, Ind. He played at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis his freshman and sophomore years. This is not Coleman's first trip to campus, and it likely won't be his last. While a number of Big Ten schools are viewed as the favorites, he has legiti- mate interest in Notre Dame. ✦ La Porte (Ind.)
