Notre Dame's 17-13 victory at home versus Michigan State Sept. 21 at the time was described as an "ugly" win for the Fighting Irish. Head coach Brian Kelly's crew to- taled only 220 yards of total offense — the lowest in his four seasons and 52 games at Notre Dame — and there were 201 yards in penalties called by the Big Ten officials (115 on Michigan State and 86 on Notre Dame). Eventually, it morphed into the first Irish victory against a team that fin- ished in the top five (No. 3 in both the Associated Press and USA Today coaches' polls) since the 31-24 triumph against national champ Florida State in 1993. Since the advent of the Associated Press poll in 1936, this marked the 18th time Notre Dame applied the lone blemish to a football team: UNDER THE DOME THE PERFECT FOIL Head coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame handed Michigan State its only defeat of the 2013 season.
