INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS The Michigan men's lacrosse team takes the term "student-athlete" seri- ously. Of the players who have declared majors, five of them are in the Ross School of Business; four of them have declared for political science, eco- nomics or both; and others are major- ing in cellular and molecular biology, mechanical engineering, business administration, sociology and history. Junior attacker David McCormack, who earned Academic All-Big Ten honors last season, is a political sci- ence major, and he is happy to be a part of a team that takes so much pride in the academic aspect of col- legiate sports. "Obviously, there isn't really a pro- fessional lacrosse league that is high paying enough to make a career out of it — not that I would really consider it anyway — but there is an element of competition to it on the team," Mc- Cormack said. "We all try to be very good students, and we're competing with each other to see who can get better grades. We're all trying to push each other, and that helps a lot. "A lot of us are in different fields throughout the university, and it is nice to be able to get home from la- crosse practice or a game and not have to talk about what happened. We can talk about our fields or what we have to do that night, and there are always people on the team mo- tivating you to do better and work harder, or study with you." McCormack enrolled in a few intro- ductory political science courses in his first two years at Michigan and was hooked. "I had an interest in history, but I also wanted to know how it was relevant to today," McCormack said. "I figured that political science was the best mix of both of those fields.
