FROM OUR READERS Well stated, Ralph. You provide an element to this argument previously unconsidered. Finding a better way to get tickets from folks like you into Michigan hands should be a priority. CANADA WEIGHS IN Dear The Wolverine: I just turned 80 years of age on Dec. 30. How a 7-year-old boy liv- ing on Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada became a Michigan Wolverine fan is beyond me. I have become very fanatical in my support of U-M. I was upset when I heard our five- star prospect cancelled his commit- ment to Michigan over the firing of the O-Coordinator. For one, I agree with the firing. I actually thought it may have taken place a year earlier. Why he would insist in having his ball carrier run into the line and be stopped time and time again was be- yond me. I also think from what I have heard that the new hire may be okay. I hope so. Now back to losing the commit- ment. Why would a kid cancel his commitment when he was always a Michigan supporter? Well why not? Michigan has always been a top team. That is, up until a few years ago. Not only has our offense been dead, but our defense has not been setting too many records. Why I am not sure. As I understand it, we have a great D-Coordinator. Nevertheless, when the chips were down in several games this season, the defense did not come through in the final min- utes. That has to be a concern. I have always believed a good de- fense wins games. Look at our little brother school and what their de- fense did. So you cannot really blame the kid for cancelling his commitment, be- cause the present Michigan team is not the team he has known during the past years. He has every right to look around. I think he made a mis- take. I think he had a great chance to change things in Michigan. I also think the new hire is suited to im- proving our offense. It is up to our coaching staff to make sure we get the right recruits. That does not mean they always have to be five stars, but that helps. Threes have done well over the years at Michigan. The quality of our teams has to be at a level that attracts recruits. Losing teams do not. Ed Corson Vancouver, British Columbia Everybody loves a winner, Ed, includ- ing recruits. Time to crank it up again. Be Heard! Send your letters to: Wolverine Letters • P.O. Box 1304 Ann Arbor, MI 48106 Or e-mail: jborton@thewolverine.com Letters may be edited for clarity or length.
