MICHIGAN FOOTBALL John Elway said. "With his versatil- ity, he'll start out at tackle and move inside and play some guard also. So we're going to be playing with a bunch of different combinations, and by the end of preseason camp, I'm sure we'll come out with the best combination." It may be the dream of every player to start right away, but Scho- field will have a chance to learn from one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL while contribut- ing in some way to a team poised to win its division and contend for the Super Bowl. "In terms of learning the NFL, it's hard to be in a better situation," Renck said. "In terms of learning how to approach defenses and pre- pare, he won't have a better situation than being around Peyton Manning." Gallon will also be learning from one of the game's all-time great quar- terbacks, and a former Wolverine, in Tom Brady. However, seventh-round choices are easily dispensable, with one study on NPR stating that less than 20 percent of all seventh-round- ers make an NFL roster their first season, but Gallon isn't up against impossible odds. "He's really going to compete with Josh Boyce and Kenbrell Thompkins, guys that were rookies last year, for the fifth receiver spot," Boston Globe reporter Ben Volin said. "[Coach] Bill Belichick said that Gallon is a com- pact, explosive athlete they can use in the slot. "I believe he has some kick return- ing experience, too, and they don't have a kick returner, so that could be a chance for him in the preseason to impress and win a spot." The 5-8, 184-pound Gallon has one advantage working in his favor — the Patriots do not discriminate against size. While other teams may prefer the prototypical 6-0 or taller wideouts, New England's top two re- ceivers a year ago — Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola — stand in at 5-10 and 5-11, respectively, and for- mer Patriots great Wes Welker, who caught 672 balls from Brady from 2007-12, is only 5-9.
