INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK PASSING Longtime Michigan media relations representative Jim Schneider passed away July 21. He was 63. Schneider served at U-M for 30 years, working with the football (18 years), baseball (30 years) and hockey pro- grams (12 years) before retiring at the end of the 2006-07 academic year. "We lost one of the great people in Michigan athletics history," former football coach Lloyd Carr (1995-2007) said. "No one loved Michigan more than Jim. He was an incredible asset to our program and players and helped contribute to our success in a number of different ways. "Jim had an amazing sense of humor. No matter what time our team returned to Ann Arbor from a road trip, Jim was always there with me to provide whatever as- sistance that was needed in those early hours. He was a dear friend and a great Michigan Man." "Jim was one of my best friends, and he was a great friend of Michigan," former U-M baseball coach Bud Middaugh (1980-89) added. "He did so much for all the student-athletes he came in contact with and was a ma- jor part of the family. "He never asked what we could do for him, he always asked what he could do for us. He had a great influence on almost everyone he came in contact with and he especially had a great influ- ence on me." HOCKEY NOTES • The Michigan hockey team pulled off a coup when it added defenseman Zach Werenski to its 2014-15 roster, signing the 6-1, 201-pound blue liner to a letter of intent July 21. The Grosse Pointe, Mich., native played for the U.S. National Team Development Program in 2013-14, scoring seven goals with 20 assists in 47 games. He is consid- ered a likely first-round 2015 NHL Draft pick. Werenski would have been a senior in high school this fall, but worked to gradu- ate early and enroll this season. "This is an exceptional player who is coming in a little younger than most play- ers," U-M head coach Red Berenson said. "I'm expecting Zach will be an impact player in our program.
