UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Sydney Foreman — Cross Country Only a freshman, Foreman paced the Irish women at the Crusader Open Sept. 5, finishing fourth overall with a time of 13:37.7. Her successful college debut foreshadows good things for a team hoping to return to the NCAA Champion- ships this fall. Her classmate, Kaitlin Frei, finished seventh, exactly 12 seconds behind Foreman. Chris Marco — Cross Country The sophomore led Notre Dame to a first-place finish at the Crusader Open Sept. 5, winning the four-kilometer race with a time of 11:04.2, just ahead of classmate Jacob Dumford's second-place 11:09.5. Marco ran in only two meets last cross country season, but a strong indoor track season set him up for success this fall. Karin Muya — Soccer In her Irish debut, Muya played a role in both of No. 25 Notre Dame's goals against No. 16 Santa Clara in a 2-0 road victory Sept. 5. Muya assisted on sophomore Morgan Andrews's opening goal and then punched in the sealing score in the 82nd minute. Two days later, the freshman midfielder applied most of Notre Dame's pressure on No. 4 Stanford, taking three shots, two of which were on goal. The scoreless draw marked the first time the Irish have not lost at Stanford. Evan Panken — Soccer The junior midfielder tallied both a goal and an assist in Notre Dame's 4-1 victory over Dartmouth to open the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament Sept. 6. Panken began his scoring sequence by slipping the ball to a teammate before making his run on the goal. As a freshman, Panken was a Big East Academic All-Star, and last season he earned All-Academic Team honors in the ACC while starting all 24 matches for the eventual national champions.
