When Collinsworth suffered the in-
jury two days before the Rice game,
it didn't leave Shumate much time to
prepare to take his place in the starting
lineup. He admitted the full week of
game planning for Michigan made a
crucial difference.
"It took a lot of preparation and I'm

cating," he said. "You have to know
everything on that defense.
"You have to learn what the lineback-
ers, the linemen and the cornerbacks
have to do and you've got to know
where you've got to be at. Basically just
getting everybody lined up and being
the quarterback of the defense."
Physical abilities have never been
questioned for Shumate, a former
four-star recruit out of Ramsey, N.J.,
but it has taken until his junior year to
emerge in the starting lineup.
"[His jump from week one to week
Redfield entered Notre Dame as a five-star recruit and, while his talent is unquestioned, the mental
aspects of playing safety have taken some time to develop.
