GAME PREVIEW: SYRACUSE home and then they get a break with Wake Forest before Clemson. "From the Notre Dame game un- til the end of October, there's not too much break in the schedule there. It's important to get out of that stretch really clean in terms of health, and they want to steal at least one of those games if not two to really gauge the progress of the program and start competing with the better teams on the schedule year after year." Against talented quarterbacks such as Notre Dame's Everett Golson and Florida State's Jameis Winston, a re- vamped Orange defensive line will be key. While the defense's best player last season, Jay Bromley (nine sacks among 13.5 tackles for loss), has grad- uated, Syracuse's defensive line as a whole is deeper and more experienced this season, led by senior defensive end Robert Welsh, who recorded four sacks a year ago. "Just in terms of numbers and sta- tistics and production, I don't think there's one guy on that defensive line who can step in this year and put up those kind of numbers," Mink said. "That said, it's a veteran defensive line led by a trio of seniors that have played a lot of football in recent years: Micah Robinson and Rob Welsh are two senior defensive ends that are going to be really important players this year. They have an inside tackle named Eric Crume and this is his fourth year and he's played a bunch going back to his freshman and soph- omore year also. "They have veteran players on the defense and they're trying to fill in gaps and get more and try to solidify the rotation." And not just at defensive line. Now that the program has been solidified, Shafer is intent on taking the next step. ✦ 2014 SYRACUSE SCHEDULE Date Opponent (TV) Result/Time (ET) Aug. 30 Villanova W, 27-26 (2OT) Sept. 13 at Central Michigan W, 40-3 Sept. 20 Maryland (ACCN) 12:30 p.m. Sept. 27 vs. Notre Dame^ TBA Oct. 3 Louisville (ESPN) 7 p.m. Oct. 11 Florida State TBA Oct. 18 at Wake Forest TBA Oct. 25 at Clemson TBA Nov. 1 North Carolina State TBA Nov. 8 Duke TBA Nov. 22 at Pittsburgh TBA Nov. 29 at Boston College TBA ^ at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. 2014 NOTRE DAME SCHEDULE Date Opponent (TV) Result/Time (ET) Aug. 30 Rice W, 48-17 Sept. 6 Michigan W, 31-0 Sept. 13 vs. Purdue* (NBC) W, 30-14 Sept. 27 vs. Syracuse^ TBA Oct. 4 Stanford (NBC) 3:30 p.m. Oct. 11 North Carolina (NBC) 3:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at Florida State TBA Nov. 1 vs. Navy+ (CBS) 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at Arizona State TBA Nov. 15 Northwestern (NBC) 3:30 p.m. Nov. 22 Louisville (NBC) 3:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at USC TBA * at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis; ^ at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.; + at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.
