INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP OLYMPIC SPORTS PERFORMERS Men's cross country redshirt junior Mason Ferlic: On Sept. 23, Ferlic was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week after taking the individual title among a field of 42 runners at the 8K Big Ten Preview. He completed the race in 24:31.63 and led the way for the Wolverines, who placed four runners in the top five. The honor marks the third time Ferlic has been named as the conference's athlete of the week. Men's gymnastics undergraduate assistant coach Sam Mikulak: Mikulak took 12th place in the 2014 FIG World All-Around Championships Oct. 9 in Nanning, China. Mi- kulak is a two-time U.S. all-around champion and notched a six-event total score of 87.591. Mikulak will return to Ann Arbor to serve as an undergraduate assistant coach for the 2015 season. Former men's swimmer David Moore: Moore has been nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship and the Marshal Scholarship. Moore is one of two nominees from Michigan athletics and is among a pool of six total candidates from the university. The Rhodes Scholarship is arguably the highest honor in all of academia. Moore graduated last spring with a degree in mechanical engineering and is currently pursuing his master's degree in the field. Women's soccer sophomore Nicky Waldeck: At the be- ginning of October, Waldeck was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. She was a key part to Michigan's wins over Nebraska Oct. 2 and Iowa Oct. 5. She scored four goals in the two games including a hat trick in the 3-1 win over Nebraska. Waldeck became just the eighth player in pro- gram history to record a hat trick and led the team with 10 goals and 24 points through Oct. 19. Women's swimmer freshman Clara Smiddy: Following a breakout debut performance against Iowa and Nebraska Oct. 3-4, Smiddy was named the Big Ten Conference Fresh- man of the Week. She swept the backstrokes, claiming victory in both the 100 and 200. This was the first weekly honor handed out by the Big Ten for the young 2014-15 season.
