UNDER THE DOME ✦ GIMME FIVE The transfer of fifth-year senior quarterback Everett Golson this spring has led to popular opinion that Notre Dame will become a much more read-option and run- oriented team with junior Malik Zaire at the throttle. That 's because in his lone start, the 31-28 victory ver- sus LSU in last December 's Music City Bowl, Zaire set a Notre Dame bowl record for most rushing yards by a quarterback with 96 on 22 carries. Zaire has demonstrated a strong aptitude at run- ning the football, although it probably would be un- healthy to attempt running him 22 times per game. If he does remain durable, then in 2015 he could conceivably rank among the top five for most rushing yards in a sea- son by a Fighting Irish quar- terback. Here are the stan- dards, including bowl games: Quarterback (Year) Carries-Yards 1. Tony Rice (1989) 188-934 2. Tony Rice (1988) 134-775 3. Carlyle Holiday (2001) 156-666 4. Paul Hornung (1955) 92-474 5. Jarious Jackson (1999) 140-464 Note: Tom Clements rushed for 434 yards for the 11‑0 national champions in 1973, while Joe Theismann rushed for 426 in 1969 as a junior. BO WALLACE WILL NOT ENROLL AT NOTRE DAME On the same day that 2011-14 Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson announced that he would use his fifth season of college eligibility at an- other school, 2015 Fighting Irish defensive end recruit Bo Wallace went on Twitter to say that he will not be enrolling at Notre Dame after all. "ATTN !! I am sorry to say that I will not be attending the University of Notre Dame, I will keep you all informed," Wallace tweeted at 5:43 p.m. on May 7. Wallace told Blue & Gold Illustrated's Andrew Ivins that the mutual decision "has kind of been in the works for a while now," but would not confirm whether it was an academic matter. "I can't really complain," he added. "It's not that I'm happy the decision was made, but sometimes you kind of got to do things for you and your household as a family." On May 15, Arizona State announced that it had signed Wallace to a Grant-In-Aid letter to study and play football at the Tempe, Ariz., school. It marked the fourth consecutive year that a recruit who inked with Notre Dame on National Signing Day never made it into his freshman season with the Fighting Irish, joining 2012 safety Tee Shepard (Ole Miss), 2013 defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes (UCLA) and 2014 linebacker Nile Sykes (Indiana). Wallace — a 6-4, 215-pound River Ridge, La., native — starred at pow - erhouse John Curtis High, last year's Division I state runner-up. Listed as a three-star recruit by Rivals, 247Sports and Scout, he fielded offers from numerous top football programs, including Arizona State, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas and UCLA. Wallace competed in the Semper Fidelis All- American Game Jan. 4 in Carson, Calif., and was selected as a team captain for his victorious East team. After an official visit to Notre Dame for the North Carolina game Oct. 11, Wallace issued a verbal commitment to the Irish the next day. Because of his extremely thin frame, Wallace was considered at least a year or two away from being physically able to compete at the major collegiate level, but Irish head coach Brian Kelly saw him as a vital get be - cause he was the lone "speed rusher" in the 2015 Irish class. Last August, Kelly indicated that the team lacked fast edge men on the pass rush, and referred to freshmen Kolin Hill and Jhonny Williams as maybe the best on the team in that area. "We were looking for a flat-out pass rusher, and we found one in Bo Wal - lace," Kelly said on National Signing Day. "… He can get to the quarterback. He can bend. He can get to the edge. We feel like we've got a guy that's going to be able to get to the quarterback in very short order." Minus Wallace, the weakside ends this year will include senior starter Romeo Okwara, sophomore Andrew Trumbetti (who has also worked on the strongside), junior Doug Randolph and sophomore Williams, who redshirted last season.
