BY LOU SOMOGYI Q uarterback Everett Golson is one of the few players in Notre Dame history to go through five spring practices. Yet in one of the top roller-coaster careers in Fighting Irish football annals, he ended up playing only two seasons under the Golden Dome. On May 7, Golson — the starter dur- ing Notre Dame's run to the BCS Na- tional Championship Game in 2012 and in the first 12 games of 2014 — an- nounced in a statement released to FOX Sports reporter Bruce Feldman that he would use his fifth and final season of eligibility elsewhere. "After much thought, prayer and dis- cussion with my family, I have decided that it is in my best interest to graduate from Notre Dame and transfer to an- other school effectively immediately," Golson said. "I would like to thank ev- eryone at Notre Dame for the opportu- nity to compete at the highest level of college football, but most importantly to obtain my degree from one of the finest universities in the country. "To all the Fighting Irish fans, I want to thank you for your support over the past four years and let you know I truly love Notre Dame. To my former team- mates, who I will miss tremendously, I wish much success in the future and will be your biggest fan from afar. "I will have no further comment at this time and ask that you respect my time as I figure out this life-changing moment. God has a plan for each of us and I ask for your prayers as I move forward in this new journey in my life." Enrolled in the Mendoza College of Business, Golson received his Notre Dame degree May 17, thereby mak- ing him eligible to compete at another Football Bowl Subdivision school this fall. On May 19, the news broke that Golson will succeed Jameis Winston, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, at Florida State. ESPN had re- ported earlier in the month that the Myrtle Beach, S.C., native had pared his list to about 10 schools, mostly powers in the South that need to find a starting quarterback.
