Key Player: Wide receiver Trent Irwin is the first
five-star player to sign with Stanford since Peat,
offensive tackle Kyle Murphy and defensive end
Aziz Shittu in 2012. Ranked as the No. 6 wide re-
ceiver nationally and the No. 31 player overall in the
country, the 6-2, 181-pounder should immediately
become one of Stanford's top targets on offense.
He finished with 106 catches for 1,974 yards and 22
touchdowns in just 12 games his senior season at
Newhall (Calif.) Hart.
Season Outlook: Fifth-year head coach David Shaw
finished 11-2, 12-2 and 11-3 in his first three sea-
sons at Stanford, but fell to 8-5 last year. A defense
that finished second nationally in yards per play
allowed (4.2) has lost eight of its top 10 tacklers
from last season, but with four offensive line start-
ers returning and a new talented target in Irwin,
fifth-year senior quarterback Kevin Hogan could
improve on his 2014 effort when he completed 232
of 352 passes (65.9 percent) for 2,792 yards with 19
touchdowns. ✦
Last season as a true freshman, Boston College running back Jon Hilliman contributed 860 yards and 13
touchdowns on the ground.
