BASKETBALL RECRUITING the third quarter, missing a couple finishes with contact after getting to the rim. He did add a few rebounds and a blocked shot to his total, but Friends Central closed to within 45-41 at the end of three. Stauskas made a couple of free throws in the fourth quarter, get- ting more aggressive against a Cen- tral defense geared to stop him. St. Mark's started to open a lead be- hind Arizona-bound big man Kaleb Tarczewski, pushing it to 56-43 in the first three-plus minutes of the last quarter, but Stauskas helped break the press late (turning it over once on a five-second call) and made a few more free throws down the stretch to finish with 16 points in a 67-57 win. It was more of the same that we've seen from Stauskas over the last few years on his ascent to becoming one of the nation's top 100 players. He's become one of the go-to guys on a team with great talent. GLENN ROBINSON III, SF 6-6 • 205 St. John (Ind.) Lake Central Rivals.com No. 34 senior nationally Though Stauskas has risen quickly in the rankings, Robinson is one of the fastest risers in his class. He re- cently out-dueled North Carolina- bound J.P. Tokoto (6-6, Rivals.com's No. 68 senior nationally), scoring 33 points in a blowout win over Menomonee Falls (Wis.) in the Bran- don Jennings Invitational in early January. He then became Lake Central's all-time scoring leader Jan. 10, help- ing his team improve to 10-2 with an 80-51 win over a shorthanded High- land squad that didn't dress four of its players. Michigan target and 2014 big man Wideman, Robinson's teammate, didn't play, out with a minor injury. "Robinson went about his business in a fashion similar to a young Bran- don Roy [University of Washington, Portland TrailBlazers]," Bossi wrote. "His size, efficient, well-constructed all-around game and patience to make plays and never-get-rattled ability set him apart from the average — or even most elite — high school wings. He's been taking his game to new levels each time we've seen him over the past few years and doesn't seem to be slowing down, if his 68 THE WOLVERINE FEBRUARY 2012 Glenn Robinson III became St. John (Ind.) Lake Central's all-time leading scorer Jan. 10 and helped his team win 10 of its first 12 games this season. Robinson notched 26 points and eight rebounds in a Jan. 10 win over Highland after scoring 22 in Lake Central's first conference loss, a 51-42 setback to Michigan City Jan. 3. Robinson responded to chants of "overrated" and "daddy's better" at Crown Point Jan. 13 by scoring 12 straight points in the second quarter and 18 in the first half. He finished with a game-high 22 in a 74-54 win. "That gave me more motivation," Robinson told NWITimes.com of the chants coming his way. "I found the fire inside me." MITCH MCGARY, PF 6-10 • 250 Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy Rivals.com No. 3 player and No. 1 PF nationally McGary and Brewster returned to action following a month-long layoff and beat New Hampton 70-54 Jan. 6, though McGary wasn't among the leading scorers. Brewster improved to 11-0 on the season and 1-0 in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class AAA league with the star-studded Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. on tap Jan. 15. McGary, averaging around 10 points per game this year on a team of outstanding players, never got on track in the Jan. 15 game against rival Tipton, a nationally televised con- test featuring some of the nation's best players. He came off the bench to finish with three points on 1-of-8 shooting, struggling with top junior Nerlens Noel's athelticism. "McGary did show his potential on the defensive end by grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Brewster Academy, and it is that defensive efficiency that has him confident that he will be able to compete in the Big Ten next sea- son," MassLive.com reported. "I have the body build for the Big Ten," McGary said. "It's a bruiser- type conference, and I think I have that type of build." Class of 2013 ZAK IRVIN, SF 6-6 • 190 Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern Rivals.com No. 54 junior nationally Irvin was named one of the Indi- ana Basketball Coaches Association/ Pacers-Fever Players of the Week Jan. 7, mainly for his showing in the City Securities Hall of Fame Clas- sic, when he scored 26 points to lead Southeastern to an 89-80 win over top-ranked North Central in the championship game in early January. He added nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. "He did a great job," head coach Brian Satterfield told the Indianapo- lis Star. "We've had a couple times out where [guard] Jacobby [Bled- soe] and Zak might have struggled a little bit with their shot, but that's a great sign that they can bounce back from it. We had a great team effort and got that team concept going. When we do that, it makes us very competitive." Irvin was the Classic's Most Valu- able Player. He contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 62-57 overtime victory over Pendleton Heights in the first game a day earlier. "I didn't think we did a poor job defensively," North Central coach Doug Mitchell said. "They hit shots, especially Irvin. He made some tough ones." Hamilton Southeastern snapped a two-game losing streak. They cap- tured a 60-51 win over Class 3A top- ranked Muncie Central Jan. 7 with
