The NBA DARIUS MORRIS MAKES HIS NBA DEBUT Welcome to the NBA, Darius Mor- ris. After leaving Michigan following his sophomore year, Morris has been thrust into a significant supporting role with the Los Angeles Lakers, the team that chose him in the second round of last year's draft. Morris made his NBA debut Jan. 11, coming off the bench for the first time during the regular season to score four points, dish out two assists and grab a rebound in 13 min- utes in a 90-87 overtime win over the Utah Jazz. Two days later, Morris became more of a focus, replacing Steve Blake as a fixture in the lineup after he suffered a rib injury. "I'm just really looking forward to maximizing my opportunity," Mor- ris told reporters before the Lakers' game against the Cleveland Cava- liers at Staples Center. Morris entered with 5:20 left in the first quarter and picked up a three- pointer and two assists in three pos- sessions, finishing with three points and four assists in 18 minutes. He made his only triple and finished HEADLINERS Former Michigan athletes in the news this month Andrew Ebbett • NHL The former Wolverine returned from a foot injury only to suffer a broken collarbone in a Jan. 7 game against Boston. Ebbett had successful surgery Jan. 12, but is expected to miss the rest of the regular season and most of the playoffs, depending on how far the Canucks advance. Braylon Edwards • NFL Edwards will spend the offseason looking for a team after San Francisco released him in December, three months after he un- derwent surgery on a right knee that limited him upon his return. "I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the playoffs," Edwards said in a statement on his website. "I will be working hard this offseason to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season." Chris Getz • MLB Getz, a former Michigan infielder, signed a one-year deal to re- main in Kansas City for another season. He will reportedly receive $967,500, up from the $443,000 he receive last year. Getz started 97 games for the Royals last season and batted .255 in 118 games. He notched nine extra base hits among his 97 hits, 26 RBI and 21 stolen bases. 88 THE WOLVERINE FEBRUARY 2012 with seven points and four more as- sists in a 102-94 loss to the Los An- geles Clippers Jan. 14, but his three came in style — a double clutch at the other side of halfcourt to end the first quarter against Clippers guard Chris Paul. "I could stand here and lie to you and say I practiced on my 50-foot- ers," Morris told the Los Angeles Times. "I just knew I needed to get the ball up with seconds running down. You just want to give your team an opportunity. I tried to go right back at him and shoot it." Morris was averaging 3.8 points, 2.5 assists and 1.3 rebounds per game as of Jan. 16. STARTS SEASON IN NBA DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE MANNY HARRIS Did wet socks cost former Michi- gan wing Manny Harris a job? Some think so. Harris started his season in the NBDL with the Canton (Ohio) Charge after the Cleveland Cavaliers cut him during a training camp in which he couldn't participate. Harris suffered freezer burn when he mis- takenly put his foot in Nike's Cryon- X treatment machine, a new version of the ice bath, with a wet sock. Doctors were not allowed to treat his foot during the NBA lockout, hampering his recovery. Harris, 22, played in 54 games last year for the Cavaliers as an un- drafted rookie free agent. He aver- aged 5.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists and started 15 games. Harris is off to a strong start with the Charge. He made four free throws in the final 26 seconds of overtime to cap a 110-103 win over Tulsa Jan. 16, finishing with 19 points, seven rebounds and six as- sists. He went 7 of 8 from the free throw line. NBA PLAYER UPDATES Through Jan. 16 • Jamal Crawford (Played at U-M in 2000), G, Portland TrailBlazders: Av- eraging 12.0 points and 3.4 assists per game in his first season with Portland … Is the Blazers' sixth man. • Juwan Howard (1991-94), F, Miami Heat: Has played in only six games, averaging 1.0 point and 1.0 rebound in 5.2 minutes per game … Has not played since Jan. 5. ❑
