Trying to compare Peppers to previous Michigan linebackers brings us back to
1997 and Ian Gold. The two shared similar builds — Peppers is 6-1, 208 pounds
and Gold was 6-1, 200 (eventually topping out at 213 his senior year) — and
both were also freak athletes blessed with incredible speed.
Gold would blossom in a role that could be called "menace" — his lone objec-
