practices on Mondays and Thursdays. She
had a switch that she could flip and turn it
on whenever she wanted to.
"What I was asking her to do is turn
the switch on Monday and leave it on for
Saturday — not to be good just on Sat-
urday. She could make us better Monday
through Thursday and she would be the
best player in the gym. As coaches, we
hope that's what our players do all the
time."
Kole "flipped the switch" so profi-
ciently at Maclay High in Tallahassee,
Fla., that she ranked No. 46 on PrepVol-
leyball.com's 2013 Senior Aces List and
was a 2012 Under Armour High School
Honorable Mention All-American.
Even though Kole had committed to
UVA before Hohenshelt was hired in Febru-
ary 2012, he was fully aware of her talents.
"I had seen her play numerous times
before so it wasn't like I didn't know
who she was," Hohenshelt said. "My first
call was to her father [James Kole] and
he asked me do you want her? Without a
doubt we wanted Haley.
"To me, it was a no-brainer. We con-
firmed it within a 24-hour window of my
getting the job."
The responsibilities of Kole's "job"
have multiplied this season because the
Cavaliers have a young team.
"Right now, we're probably asking her
to take on more of an offensive burden
then we ever have, and there are times
when she's on the floor with five fresh-
men," Hohenshelt explained. "She has to
lead. We're going to ask her to do a lot
and she has to help five other people."
As if that wasn't enough, Kole also
must contend with the fact the conference
coaches selected her for the 2016 All-
ACC preseason team.
"It does put more pressure on me be-
cause it's a huge honor," she said. "It's
something that I've been working for and
I've wanted to achieve.
"Fortunately, the team is great. We're
super sarcastic out of the gym. We al-
ways hold each other accountable, and
they push me to be a better player and
leader." ◆
